Battle of the Books

The city Battle of the Books is a contest that has as its purpose the encouragement of quality reading. Team members read from a list of 30 books chosen by librarians and teachers. Questions are asked of students, scores are kept and winners are recognized; however emphasis is placed on working together as a team and the fun of participating in friendly competition.

Sample Question: In which book does a girl study the Wall Street Journal?
Answer: The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin

Any team of 10 fourth and fifth grade students from elementary public, parochial or private schools may participate. Starting November 1, students may be given the list of books and practices may begin.

The inter-school tournament takes place on two Friday afternoons in late April or early May beginning at 4:15 P.M. at Mahone Middle School. Teams will rotate from room to room battling approximately five teams on each Friday. Accumulative scores will be kept throughout the two afternoons and the top scoring teams will be recognized at the award assembly and reception that follows.
